RENEWAL OF VOWS
Reaffirmation or ‘renewal of vows’ ceremonies are becoming more popular amongst couples already married, but wanting to celebrate their enduring marriage and re-state their commitment to each other before their families and friends. Often such ceremonies are planned to be held on significant wedding anniversaries, but also for couples who have re-united after a period of separation.
A renewal ceremony is a time for reflection on the time the couple has been married, their journeys through life events to date and their re-commitment to each other for the rest of their lives.
“I declare that they are and will remain husband and wife.”
Such a celebration can, in many ways, appear to be just like a marriage ceremony, but it is important to note it is a renewal and cannot be (nor seen to be) a marriage. The couple is already married to each other and cannot, according to Australian law, enter into another marriage together.
